CYFC u18’s 2 – 1 Ballymoney

Following a lengthy winless run Cookstown were hopeful that these opponents offered the opportunity to restore some much needed positivity.

However the opening ten minutes belonged to their opponents and several good chances were waisted. Cookstown responded and played some neat football in the final third with Jude Murphy firing over and then Jamie Barry hit a stinging effort to test the keeper out. The opening goal arrived with Jac McKnight firing a right foot shot across the keeper and soon after it got even better for Cookstown as Aren Kudrenko knocked the ball into space and then slotted superbly into the bottom corner of the net.

Cookstown again came under a lot of early second half pressure but managed to hang on till their lead with central defenders Harry McKenzie and in particular Josh Burton dealing with some difficult situations. Jake Donnelly helped to protect both of them with a very disciplined performance in front of them.
At the other end Peter McClean almost headed a third goal for his team and then a superb flighted pass from Sean Og Shields into the path of striker Jude Murphy was a fraction offside with the goal gapping.A superb piece of skill by Leon Martin was stopped by foul means resulting in a red card although with ten men Ballymoney had a good go in the final ten minutes forcing keeper Ethan Gordon into a couple of decent saves and substitute Gonçalo Russo proved to be a good outlet for his team mates on the right side of midfield.

Next up for the lads is a home fixture versus high flying St Oliver Plunketts.
