Cookstown under 10s travelled to Belfast on Friday to play against Shinkill youth the the south Belfast league Cookstown started brightly and had some great build up play but couldn’t find the net with Ryan Mc’Cullagh hitting the post and Ruairi Kelly rattling the crossbar with a well hit volley but against the run of play Shankill scored just before half time to leave it 1-0 at the break.

Cookstown took control again and after some good football played out from the back involving the Harris Hill, jack Kirkpatrick and Kyle Chamber’s, Jensen Bell scored a brilliant hit shot to the top corner from 20 yards Luke Fearon and Adam Toal chasing down the ball to release Ryan to score the 2nd. Cookstown had all the ball now and scored a quick 3rd well taken by Jensen. Armagh City 2 – 2 CYFC u14 MUYL

Cookstown lads started off on the back foot with Armagh dictating the game in the early stages. Sure enough the Armagh pressure paid off when a mistake at the back left the Armagh centre forward clear in on goal & he made no mistake. Timoney up top, for Cookstown, was feeding off scraps and almost conjured up an equaliser on his own after dancing past a few defenders but the keeper made a smart save, down to his right. Another mistake or moment of hesitation within the backline allowed Armagh to stretch their lead to two goals.

Cookstown came out for the second half a lot more determined to get the ball down and take their game to Armagh. Timoney was linking up well and getting a lot more support from his midfield. The defence were a lot more assured and reduced Armagh to long range efforts. Cookstown’s first goal came via a surging run from Compton at right back, he played a one two with Hampsey and his cross for Timoney created confusion between goalkeeper and centre half with the latter turning the ball into his own net. Tails were up then!

Minutes later, Loughran at left back fed the ball into Conway, he swivelled and released Martin out wide on the left who instantly slipped Timoney in, his ferocious strike from 20 plus yards rattled off the foot of the post. Although no equaliser on this occasion, the boys were full of belief and were pressing the Armagh lads all over the pitch. With a minute to spare, the equaliser eventually came & it was a goal worthy of winning the game. Great build up play from Burton and Compton in defence freed up Conway who fired the ball first time into Davidson’s feet, his deft touch and through ball found Timoney, who feigned to his right, sending defender one way before bringing ball onto his left side and using his right foot to trivela it past the hapless City goalkeeper. A draw seemed to be a fair result, in the end. Armagh dominating the first half and the Youth taking control of the second half.

There was a real tireless work rate from the Cookstown boys on Friday night, when out of possession, this has been lacking in recent weeks so here’s hoping the boys can kick on & get their season up and running proper.

Squad: Ruairi O’Hagan, Luke Compton, Caleb Burton, Matthew Compton, Aodhan Loughran, Shea Conway, Caleb Bell, Hayden Martin, Tyler Rogers, Aaron Taylor, Orann Timoney, Jonah Davidson, Brooklyn Dobson, Conall Hampsey

CYFC u18’s 1 – 1 Oxford United

After a few unlucky results for the u18s it was back to national league action at Meadowbank where the Cookstown boys were keen to put in a good performance and hopefully get a positive result. It all started well for the youth taking the game to Oxford without creating any clear cut chances but having the lions share of pocession. Unfortunately for Cookstown Oxford took an eary lead against the run of play after a mistake form the Cookstown defender.

Cookstown continued to play football with the midfield three of McClean , Whitten and Donnelly dominating and the two wingers burns and Kudrenko looking lively . Oxford could of made it two but for a fabulous save from Gordon who was quick to react of his line . Kudrenko probably will feel he should of leveled the scores after good work from burns an Shields forcing a good save from the Oxford gk.

Cookstown got themselves into the game after a great pass from Donnelly fed Burns who then found Shields and he made no mistake with a fine finish. Both teams continued to cancel each other out to see out the first half 1-1.
2nd half and Oxford started the brighter but credit to Mckenzie, Burton, Devlin and Keturaris who were equal to all that Oxford were throwing at us . Oxford were then awarded a penalty after their speedy striker was clipped from behind , but once again Gordon in goals was not to be beaten saving with his feet and managing to steer the rebound away. Cookstown introduced Barry on the left and continued to play the better passing football ,the youth nearly got their noses in front when McClean just couldn’t direct the ball with his head from a corner and Burton just putting over the bar .

Oxford had their chances too but Cookstown were working hard in an out of pocession and with only a few minutes left Donnelly once again found burns in space bursting into the box but the Oxford defender done well to make the tackle an both teams having to share the spoils with a hard earned point. 1-1

All in all probably a fair result and so on to the next game which will be 2nd placed Limavady at scroggy rd next Friday night .

Squad: Gordon, Keturaris, Burton, Mckenzie, Devlin, Whitten, Donnelly, McClean, Kudrenko, Burns, Og Shields, Barry
