U18s Too Strong For Markethill

U18s Too Strong For Markethill

CYFC U18s 6 – 2 Markethill Swifts

Cookstown Youth under 18s took there unbeaten run to Markethill last Saturday and knew it would be a tough and physical game. The game started very even with most of the play in the middle of the pitch, the first chance came on the 10 minute mark with McCracken testing the keeper with a low drive. Cookstown started to settle and grew into the game with some good football being played on a questionable pitch to say the least, the first goal came from a well worked move which saw McCracken find himself space on the left wing. Glasgow met the perfefct cross with a fine header which left the keeper no chance in the Markethill goal. The second came soon after with Mccracken capitalising on the keepers poor kick, he beat the defence for pace a rifled his shot into the top corner. The game started to become physical with some hard but fair challenges going in all over the pitch but the young Cookstown team took it all in there stride. On the 40 minute mark a good move seen Glasgow having a pile driver of a shot saved leading to a corner, the resulting corner was met with a bullet header from Cookstowns captain Watson to make it 3 nil. Just before the half time whistle a Cookstown defensive mistake guifted Markethill a goal to make it 3 – 1 at half time.

At half time Anderson came on to give the Cookstown midfield some energy, this match was turning into a real dog fight and in the first 10 minutes of the second half saw Cookstown hit the post 3 times and the crossbar once. Markethill got there reward for digging in, there striker ran down a long ball which led to miscommunication in the back line and he slotted home from 12 yards, Cookstown were now in a game and Markethill started to play some good football. Just as the game was getting away from them Cookstowns Young winger Gubyrsiak went on a strong run from the half way line beating 4 players for pace, power and skill and expertly slotted home from a very tight angle. This proved to be the sucker punch and Cookstown regained control of the game, Anderson got his reward for his hard work in the midfield when Glasgow passed to him on the edge of the box and he side footed passed the out stretched keeper. Rocks finished the scoring with a strong run from midfield and chipped the onrushing keeper,  by this stage Markethill had stopped and cookstown finished out the game in the attacking third.
