Match Reports From Friday 18th December 2015

CYFC 15s

Cookstown rearranged a National League fixture to accommodate Loughgall at MUSA recently and after a hefty defeat to their local rivals and prospective promotion contenders earlier in the season, both players and management knew this was going to be a tough encounter. With the wind on their backs Cookstown pressurised Loughgall with striker Karl Martin forcing a great save from the travelling keeper and captain Iarlaith Donaghy going close on 15 minutes. On twenty minutes this pressure was turned on its head with the Loughgall striker pouncing on a right wing cross to steal the lead. Keeper Morgan Moore pulled off two fantastic saves as Gall put the pressure on. A long range free kick by Ben McErlean, through a slight deflection, ended up in the back of the net to even things up on 28 minutes. But on the stroke of half time Gall hit their second.
Two minutes into the second half Gall’s striker outpaced Cookstown’s defence to hit their third before both Eoin Gallagher and Donaghy forced good saves. Sub Jake Fraser then danced through Gall’s defence to stroke his shot just wide. Moore was superb again saving three chances before Loughgall finished the game with two more goals. Donaghy went close again but it was Loughgall’s night.
A tough finish for the lads in 2015, but these are the exacting levels at National League level the boys and coaches must strive to attain. The boys and management will pull together in the New Year to develop and grow and continue to improve and compete at this level.
A big thanks to all our boys, parents and friends for 2015, a Merry Christmas and a prosperous and healthy New year – Gerry, James and Andy.
CYFC 15s
CYFC 17s 3  Coleraine 4
A clinker of a game was watched by a big crowd at the Mid Ulster Sports Arena as the 17s took on Coleraine in National League (B) recently..
Kyle Devlin struck twice in the first half to put the home team two up after twenty minutes and the Cookstown lads were in control with Oliver Diamond the standout performer on the right side of midfield . Unfortunately Cookstown took the foot of the pedal and The Bannsiders pulled one back just before half time to get themselves back in the game.
The second half was played a high tempo and as the match went on the visitors got stronger and before long had leveled the score and shortly after took the lead with two unstoppable efforts. Both teams had chances and the hometeam continued to play some nice football but seemed to struggle against the high ball play of their opponents. Coleraine extended their lead and Stevie Arrell guided home one of traditional free kicks to leave the score 4  3 in the Bannsiders favour and in the dieing minutes of the game Shea McConville had a great chance cleared of the line.
A great match for the neutral but the 17s deserved something out of it which makes the scoreline cruel , however thats football.
M.O.T.M Oliver Diamond.
