CYFC u14’s 2-2 Coleraine Academy

Last Saturday the 2008’s travelled to the newly projected £7m revamped Showgrounds at Coleraine in what on paper looked their biggest test of the season to date. It was a real privilege for the boys to be the first youth team to compete on the new 4G surface after a opening ceremony and charity match the previous night. Within 2 minutes of the whistle, midfielder Mulgrew could have delivered the opener for the Blues after a great run and pass from Beatty only to blast over the bar from 10 yards with the goal at his mercy. Beatty then dragged a free kick wide on 9 minutes from 30 yards before Patterson in goal made two cracking saves on 15 and 20 minutes as Coleraine’s midfield started to dominate proceedings.
Mulgrew then saw a great finish into the bottom right hand corner cancelled out for offside on 25 minutes before a powerful shot from the Coleraine midfielder looped high over Patterson and into the net from the edge just before the halftime whistle.
Six minutes into the second half Donnelly tested the Bannsider’s keeper from 25 yards with Coleraine missing a great chance with a sliced shot 2 minutes later. Beatty levelled proceedings with a great run and slotted finish down the right on 45 minutes before Coleraine struck the woodwork. McElhatton latched unto a fine pass after good work from Kelso, Donnelly and McCrory in midfield forcing an unbelievable save from the Coleraine keeper.
Cookstown’s back four of Lennox, Long, McKenzie and Price where now under the cosh as Coleraine tried to finish the game off. But a fabulous through ball from substitute Wilson set McElhatton up to blast an unstoppable shot home for the equaliser with minutes remaining. Cookstown went for the jugular in the dying minutes but overall a draw was probably the right outcome for both teams. Maiden City at home up next with hopefully Beechway cut and ready by the council…
