Cookstown Youth 1 – 0 Dungannon Youth Colts

The visitors started off the brighter of the two teams as Cookstown were struggling to get into any rhythm. Panicking in possession and second to every breaking ball within the opening exchanges and only for good goalkeeping from O’Hagan in nets, they could of been a goal down. A few stern words from the sidelines seemed to have a positive effect on the boys as they quickly turned things around, Halligan causing the Dungannon defence trouble on several occasions with his penetrating runs and the midfield four of Mc Aleer, Conway, Davidson and Martin becoming more of a force with and without the ball.
Second half saw the introduction of Mc Cabe, Timoney and Hampsey, who all gave the opposition midfield and defence something to think about. Timoney slotting Hampsey through and his pinpoint cross found Mc Cabe who could only aim his shot straight at the keeper. Goal came a few minutes after this, Dungannon were on the attack when Rogers robbed the attacker of the ball and broke out of defence on the counter attack, evading two challenges before sliding a beautiful ball through for young Mc Cabe, who dispatched accordingly. Great pass and the finish more than matched it. Cookstown almost had a second and what a goal it would have been, Keane in the right back position, intercepted a through ball and off he went. Dancing past two midfielders he crossed the halfway line, a ball roll and a stepover later and he’s in on goal, only for an excellent stop from the keeper we were surely witnessing a contender for goal of the season. Cookstown remained dogged to see the game out.

CYFC u14’s 3-3 Don Bosco’s

Last Saturday the Blues played their final home game of the season to Don Bosco’s at MUSA.

Buoyed by a hard earned victory over Ballymoney the previous week, the young Sizzlers started brightly with McElhatton going close with a shot from the edge flying over the crossbar after 7 minutes. Captain McKenzie tested the keeper with a stinging free 10 minutes later before McCrory was unceremoniously upended in the box 2 minutes later. To the shock of home coaches and supporters the ref played on deeming the challenge a fair tackle. Despite efforts from McCrory and Kelso it was Don Bosco’s who raced into the lead on 27 minutes. Minutes later McCrory was fouled once again in the area with Brendan Mulgrew comfortably slotting home the equaliser from the spot. Just before the halftime whistle striker Kelso thundered home Cookstown’s second with a 25 yard pile driver.

Into the second half Don Bosco’s should have equalised from a free header from a corner which slid past Patterson’s post. McCrory then saw a shot cleared off the line after outsprinting the keeper to a great though ball from Brendan Mulgrew. McCrory then saw a headed effort saved before Don Bosco’s equalised on 50 minutes when Cookstown’s defence failed to clear a cross into their box.

Long then powered home a Brendan Mulgrew corner with a brilliant header with 10 minutes remaining. Don Bosco’s pushed and pushed for an equaliser and were rewarded with a penalty in the very last minute of the game with the result 3-3 on the final whistle. Away to Maiden City in the final game of the season next Saturday.
