Hard Fought Draw For The U12s

CYFC U12s 1 – 1 Armagh

The CYFC Youth team travelled to Annagh playing fields on Saturday to take on Armagh City. The two sides had some hard-fought matches last season and this game was to be no different. The first half was a real tussle in the mid field with Tom Wilkinson, Tom Bell, Aaron Quinn and Peter McClean keeping the Armagh team at bay. As the game progressed the CYFC lads started to strike deeper into the Armagh half. James Bell managed to latch onto several through balls and Peter McClean scraped the paintwork on a number of occasions from some outstanding free kicks. The nip and tuck continued in a cagey first half with the CYFC back three of Jack McClure, Jack Quinn and Luke McElkennon called into action to keep the score level at the stroke of half time.

Team manager Barrie Kelly made several tactical changes early in the second half brining on Chris Ward, Jack Kearney, Jamie Kerrigan and Dara McNally to change the game. The fresh legs made an immediate impact with Jack Kearney dazzling the Armagh men down the right-hand side of the pitch with his speed and superb touch on the ball. It wasn’t too long before Kearney won a free kick which McClean promptly dispatched into the Armagh net from 25 yards. The goal spurred the CYFC team on as they pressed hard for a second, coming close several times. Some superb kicking from keeper McClure keeped the pressure on Armagh, with McNally getting through on goal but was unable to finish.

Despite looking confident and in control of the game since taking the lead, a moment of hesitation in the CYFC defence saw Armagh pounce on a loose ball to equalise with only minutes of the match remaining. CYFC pressed to try and recapture the lead but to no avail. This will feel like a loss for the CYFC lads and they will no doubt want to put the record straight when they meet Armagh City in their next encounter!

Team: Jack McClure, Luke McElkennon, Jack Quinn, Tom Bell, Tom Wilkinson, Jack Kearney,Jamie Kerrigan, James Bell, Dara McNally, Luke Neeson, Peter McClean, Chris Ward, Aaron Quinn, Connall Sheehy.
