National league knock out cup final CYFC 12s v Portadown Youth u12s
Venue MUSA 18.45 ko

On friday 13th may Cookstown Youth saw the curtain fall on their season with a cup final against Portadown a team in which they had not beat all season. However this did not effect Cookstown u12s as the put in their best performance of the season.

Cookstown started so brightly and looked more up for it than portadown but you could tell there was nerves on both sides. Cookstown enjoyed a spell of posession early on and came close to getting an opening goal early on when sh OHare hit the post with a brilliant strike. However it wouldnt take long before cookstown did get the opening goal as they were the only team that did look like scoring early on when a corner was wipped in portadown tried to clear there lines but the ball dropped to sh Ohare and he connected sweetly on the half volley and smashed the ball home to make it 1-0 cookstown.

However that goal sparked an new life into portadown and it wouldnt take long before they got a equaliser when the striker was on hand to tap in a cross 1-1. Cookstown battled hard tho in what was a thrilling end to end game and with a large crowd present supporting the local team a they pushed for that second while a back line of B.Purvis S.Donnelly N.Odonnell B.Ryan C.Devlin holding solid at the back and with Se Ohare putting in what can only be discribed as a extrodanary performance in the holding midfield role it allowed a midfield of M.Anderson B.Hamilton M.Conlin C.McALeer to push forward and support the strikers M.Forbes and Sh Ohare.

As the second half started both teams came out again all guns blazing and kept the momentium of the first half going nether team could break the other down and with the final wistle lumming and no sign of a winner coming 1 more goal would certainly win this contest it was probably goin to take something special and that exactly what happend. Deep into injury time b.hamilton picked the ball up just outside the box and sent a thunderous effort looping over the portadown goal keeper and sent cookstown onto lift the cup well done to all the boys who played a part in getting to the final and for all the support from local parents and supporters lifting the cup certainly topped of what was a very successful 1st session in the national league.

Man of the match performance came from N.ODonnell

CYFC 18s v Oxford Sunnyside , Decor Cup Final.

Cookstown took to knockrammer park to play Oxford Sunnyside in the final of the Decor cup, the first CYFC team to reach the final of the cup since 2003. Both teams started off sloppy but it was Cookstown who had the first chance when great work from Wilson Tavares and Mark Megarry created a cross into the box but Paul Stewart could only hide wide, Sloppy defending from Cookstown led to the first goal of the game going to sunny side to put the lurgan side 1-0 up after 25 minutes. Cookstown had chances shortly after Mark Megarry blasting the ball just over and josh Adams hitting the post from 20 yards. Both teams went in at half time knowing there was more goals to come. Cookstown again had chances early in 2nd half with Jordan Glasgow shooting just wide and Mark Megarry having a great effort saved. The game was level with 80 mins played when Aidan Murphy got on the end of a goal mouth scramble and knocked it into the roof of the net. Minutes later Cookstown were In front Mark Megarry heading the ball past the Sunnyside keeper to put Cookstown 2-1 ahead with minutes left. But the strong Cookstown defence held their own in the last 5 minutes to give the CYFC team their 2nd trophy of the season, the players and management would like to thank the fans for their ongoing support throughout the long season.

Cookstown youth entertained Belfast side Mountainview at Beechway knowing a win would see them as champions. On a sunkist day it rained goals. The youth started on the front foot and O,Neil and McKenna had the first chances on goal but both players seen there efforts go over the bar. Danny McElhatton tried a spectacular over head kickbut that came to no avail. On 10 mins the Youth opened the scoring.Prolific goal scoring machine Megarry had a pop at goal from 18 yards out and his effort whizzed in to the back of the Mountainview net. Within 2 mins the advantage was doubled when left back Leslie went on one of his virtuoso runs and he fired a bullet of a shot that rattled the back of the net. that lead was reduced  when McEllhatton in the Cookstown goal came for a cross and fumbled the ball and there was Brown of Mountainview who accepted the gift and tapped the ball into an empty net. Cookstown again pushed for goals. A corner put in by Kelly and the referee seen an infringement in the box and pointed to the penalty spot. O,Neill took responsibilty for the penalty and as calmly as you like sent the keeper the wrong way to make the score 3-1 to the locals. Mountainview with a never say day attitude pushed forward and were rewarded with a free kick.  A high hanging ball was put into the Cookstown box and the Cookstown defence failed to clear and Orr unleashed a shot past McEllhatton no chance in goal.5 mins from half time Cookstown give themselves a 2 goal cushion when a Kelly missile throw was flicked on by McKenna and there was top goal scorer O,Neil to head the ball into the net and send Cookstown youth into the half with a 4-2 lead.
John Scott came on at the start of the second half for Jordan Glasgow who has ben immense over the past week. Mountainview started the brighter of the 2 teams with some sustained pressure that came to nothing.O,Neil had an effort hit the cross bar and Mountainview had argument for a penalty but the referee waved on play. The youth now were starting to dominate matters and with some great passing in the midfield a golden opportunity was given to Megarry but the Mountainview keeper made a super save to deny the big marksman. Mountainview scored again when a cross into the youth box and McEllhatton failed to deal with it and again Orr scored and easy goal to reduce the score line.O,Neil was replaced by the young left winger Keifer Scott. On 70 mins Cookstown made it 5-3 when another Kelly throw in special was met by Megarry and he headed into the roof of the net. Megarry himself was then replaced by Drew Kelly . On the 90th minute came the goal of the game. Danny McEllhatton who has bonded one of the best midfield partnerships in the league with McKenna got himself his first goal of the season. From 20 yards out he curled a ball high into the top corner past the Mountainview keeper giving him no chance. While McEllhatton and his team mates were celebrating the Belfast team were allowed to kick off and they scored within seconds to make the score 6-4 to the local team. The referee,s final whistle was met with a mass of hysteria from all of the players , management and all of the supporters who had come down to cheer on the local lads. This win guaranteed Cookstown Youth champions of DIV 2  ahead of Brantwood who they play this Sat 21st May in the last game of the season at the 3g pitch at the MUSA 2pm ko.
