CYFC U18s Good Start Continues

Cookstown Youth FC U18s 5 – 1 Lurgan Town U18s
On Saturday the Under 18s took on Lurgan Town in what was going to be the Young’s side biggest test to date, with a few absentees some of are younger players got the call but they didn’t disappoint! Cookstown started on the front foot and took the game straight to Lurgan pinning them back into there half, the young teams passing game had the opposition chasing shadows and the first chance came within the first 10 mins. Glasgow played a lovely through ball to McCracken who’s shot was well saved down low my the Lurgan shot stopper, the same move 5 minutes later saw the same result only the keeper could only parry and McCracken slotted home the rebound from a narrow angle. This first goal settled the team and the second came quickly as McMullan got the ball on the left wing and rifled home from 12 yards, again from a narrow angle. Lurgan started to pump the ball long to see if they could cause the cookstown defence bother but the aerial challenge was met by Cookstown’s Captain, watson and co looked comfortable and gave Lurgans strike partnership nothing in the final third. The third came on the stroke of half time when Cookstown’s young keeper Campbell played a world class 70 yard pass to McMullan on the left wing, again from a narrow angle he curled it by the keeper to give the U18s and 3 nil lead at half time.
The second half started slow and cookstown had to wait for there fourth, but when rocks played Glasgow through he took the shot quickly on the half volley from 20 yards and gave the keeper no chance! Lurgan started to put pressure on Cookstown’s back line and got there reward when a corner wasn’t cleared and the ball was poked over the line by the Lurgan Striker. Soon after Lurgan tested the backline again and only for the acrobatics of Campbell in nets, who made a stunning save and held on with Lurgans strike rushing in. Cookstown’s fifth and final goal came on the final whistle when Devlin curled a beauty into the top corner just inside the box! It could have been more only for good defending by Lurgan at set pieces but Cookstown’s management team was very impressed with the performance.
