CYFC U12s Colts Claim Plate Final Victory

On Saturday Cookstown Youth Colts played in their League Plate final against Glenavon. In a tight first half Cookstown had to battle hard and struck first after 10 minutes. Some good attacking play saw Callum McCreesh play through PJ Cassidy who cut in from the left hand side and superbly found the bottom left corner. The back line of Ryan Eccles, Sean Devlin and Jamie Barry were looking solid when tested. Within minutes, however, Glenavon equalised to put Cookstown under pressure again. Cookstown continued to work hard in midfield with Shayne Ferrity and Ciaran Devlin working well together. Cookstown took the lead again when Ciaran Devlin played the ball in behind the Glenavon defence for Callum McCreesh to blast past the keeper. Two minutes later Glenavon were level again when a mistake in midfield allowed Glenavon to go unchallenged and score before the half. Dylan Hamilton was introduced in place of the injured Jake Ballantine who had been doing well on the right wing.

Cookstown kept fighting for another goal and it came ten minutes into the second half through Callum McCreesh. Shaun Og Shields, Jude Murphy, Ryan Huey and Canice Cullen were all introduced to freshen up the squad. Shaun Og Shields soon had a impression on the game when he skilfully made his way down the right wing only to see his shot go over the bar. Cookstown also went close when a long ball from Ryan Eccles found Callum McCreesh who lobbed the keeper only to see his effort hit the bar and come out. Glenavon piled on the pressure in the final few minutes with Ethan Gordon doing well in the Cookstown goal. To the delight of the travelling support the Colts managed to hold firm and win their first trophy together.
