CYFC MATCH REPORT FROM SATURDAY 6th MAY 2017

CYFC SENIORS 1 NEWINGTON 3
CYFC  came into this game against reigning division champions Newington knowining that anything less than a victory would end their chances of winning the league. As early as the 5th minute CYFC could of opened the scoring when a ball whipped into the box by Megarry just evaded the outstretched foot of Drew Kelly. Newington were now starting to find their stride and were keeping the Cookstown back four on their toes.A few rash tackles around the Cookstown penalty box lead to a few heart stopping moments for McEllhatton in goal but all Newingtons efforts all went the wrong side of the post much to the relief of the Cookstown squad. Dardis took a freekick for Cookstown but forward Ally Young put his header over the crossbar . On the 20th minute Newington took the lead. Lack lustre play from the home side gave the visitors possession  and within a blink of an eye Daniel Moore placed the ball past McEllhatton in the CYFC goal  to make the score  0.1 . Young was replaced by Oneill on 30 mins due to an injury.CYFC were struggling to break down the well drilled Newington defence and the only clear cut chance that the local team had was when a high ball into the box from Megarry was only pushed out to the feet of O,Neill but he could only hit the side netting.
CYFC did come out in the second half with all guns blazing but all their efforts were all comfortably dealt with by the Newington goalkeeper. On 60 mins both Drew and Barrie Kelly were replaced by Larmour and Scott with the hope of the locals levelling the score. McEllhatton was in fine form again when he superbly tipped over a Newington freekick which had goal written all over it. Just when Cookstown thought they had weathered the storm Newington extended their lead , when again from some sloppy play CYFC lost possession and there was Nial Southam to extend the visitors lead and gave them a 2 goal lead and within touching distance of becoming division 1 champions again. James Leslie went of injured for CYFC and the locals had to play out the rest of the game with 10 men. Cookstown to their credit never gave up and had a few half chances from O,neill and Larmour but neither could find the magical touch that would gave the local side a goal. On the 85th minute came the goal that ended the game as a competition and Cookstowns slim chance of winning the league. Havor who had just came on as sub for Newington cut inside the right wing and shot past Mcellhatton into the Cookstown goal to make the score 0.3. In injury time Scott scored a consolation goal for CYFC but it was too little too late. The referee blew the full time whistle and with the final score being  CYFC Seniors 1 Newington 3, Newington were now crowned Ballymena Div 1 champions. Cookstown Seniors now turn their attention to this Fri 12th May were they play Woodlands in the final of the Canada Trophy. CYFC are the current holders and will be all out to retain this trophy.
