CYFC MATCH REPORT FROM EASTER SATURDAY 15th APRIL 2017

CYFC SENIORS  2 WHITEABBEY 0
Last saturday CYfc seniors played whiteabbey at MUSA. The last time these 2 teams met the supporters were treated to an eleven goal thriller. CYFC started the more lively of the two teams but it was the visitors that had the first half chance . A freekick  was awarded to Whiteabbey just outside the Cookstown penalty area. A strongly hit shot just went the wrong side of the post for Whiteabbey. Mcmenemey then should have opened the scoring when Stewart cut in from the right wing to square for the big CYFC forward but he blazed his effort over the cross bar. CYFC at times were struggling at times to get any rythmn into there play due to Whiteabbey playing with all their team behind the ball.Paul Stewart did have the ball in the net for CYFC but the referee but the whistle for an infringement. Barrie Kelly was using his missile throw to good effect but no Cookstown player could get the finishing touch that would open the scoring. The deadlock was broken on the 25th minute when Kelly and Megarry linekd up well with some neat passing and the duo lead off a square ball to Mcmenemey who shot low nd hrd into the Whiteabbey goal to give the hosts a 1.0 lead. Ally Young and McKenna were in control of the midfield battle and the visitors were struggling to make an impact on the locals goal. Megarry sprung the Whiteabbey offside trap and was one on one with the keeper but a last minute tackle from the centre half denied Megarry. Megarry was then replaced by Millar due to injury. On the stroke of half time CYFC played a short corner and a whipped in ball by Millar was met by the foot of Young who guided the ball past the Whiteabbey goal keeper.
The second half started with the Cookstown side having all the possession but failing to turn it into goals. Barrie and Drew Kelly had long range efforts for the youth but they were put high over the cross bar of Whiteabbey. Mcmenemey had another great effort to double his tally but his superb curling shot just scraped the paint of the visitors post.Adam Watson replaced Mcmenemey and the youngster had a pop shot from 25 yards out and the Whiteabbey keeper did well to hold Watsons effort. cyfc made one final sub when again they introduced another youngster in Jack Turkington. Paul Stewart took a hold of the ball in midfield and went on a solo run were he dribbled past 5 of the opposition but his final effort on goal fell comfortably into the arms of the Whiteabbey keeper. CYFC seen out the remainder of the game without conceeding and ran out comfortabl 2.0 winners.
