Cookstown Colts Hit Northend For 5

Cookstown Colts Hit Northend For 5

Cookstown Colts 5 – 1 Northend United

Cookstown Youth Colts entertained Northend United Youth at MUSA in their first home league game of the season in the Ballymena & Provincial Junior Division 2.

Hoping to carry on from their 3-1 win over local rivals Killymoon Rangers on the opening day of the season, In wet and miserable conditions Cookstown hit the ground running and provided all the early pressure against Northend. Chances were created throughout the first half with Thornton, McCracken, Dobson, Kilpatrick and McMenemy seeing their chances blocked or saved by the keeper before Kilpatrick headed home from a cross to leave the half time score 1-0

The second half started where Cookstown had left off. Shortly after the restart McCracken took on the defender on the right hand side, turning him and firing past the keeper to put Cookstown 2-0 up. Then Cookstown failed to clear their lines and Nothend pulled one back in a game in which Cookstown were in total control as Northend rarely troubled the back four of Scott, Dardis, Stewart and Thornton. Grabrystak replaced McCracken and a short time later a McMenemy ball found Gabrystak who slotted home to make it 3-1.

Throughout the game there were some referring decisions which confused both teams and 20 minutes into the second half Dobson seen red for dissent. A slight reshuffle which seen Adams replace McMenemy, helped close out the game with Stewart heading home from a corner and Kelly converting a penalty after being upended in the box before McKernan replaced Kilpatrick.

CYFC Colts Manager McKenzie said we made hard work of it at times but the team showed strength and resilience to grind out a good result with a good team effort.

Best wishes to the Northend player who suffered a possible serious ankle injury during the match.
