CYFC u11s defeated Portadown FC Colts

Last Saturday the 2008’s faced Portadown FC Colts in a MUYL fixture at the People’s Park 3G. Despite the tight pitch at Portadown, Cookstown started on the front foot with Wilson’s drive just clearing the crossbar in the opening minute. Another shot by Wilson was well saved but followed up by Mulgrew who finished with aplomb on 3 minutes to open the scoring. McElhatton then saw a shot cleared off the line before his beautiful through ball played in Donnelly who delightfully chipped the on rushing keeper for another goal on 7 minutes. On 10 minutes McElhatton’s stinging drive rocked the upright with Wilson sneaking in at the back post to score from the rebound. Mulgrew then met a Donnelly corner to double his tally with a great finish on 16 minutes. The Reds then pulled a goal back just before halftime.

Cookstown continued their high press and quick passing  game with Kelso seeing an effort cleared off the line and O’Neill striking the woodwork. Talbot broke clear only to be thwarted by a fabulous save from the Red’s keeper before Kelso’s header just missed the target. Donnelly then found the top corner from a thunderous 20 yard free kick on 37 minutes to extend the White’s lead. McElhatton was flagged offside after finding the back of the net but made up for it a minute later with a fine finish. McElhatton was denied twice in 3 minutes before Talbot pounced on a Wilson rebound to hit his first of the game on 40 minutes. He doubled his tally on 43 minutes when the Portadown keeper failed to hold unto the ball and hit his hat trick on 50 minutes after good work from defender Irwin. Portadown never gave up with keeper Patterson making two fine saves near the end before Ferson went close with a long range drive. A fine display of passing and finishing by the young sizzlers and a never say die performance from Portadown.

A Cookstown derby with the Colts next Saturday to wet the tastebuds.

                                                                      CYFC u16s 4-0 Brookvale FC

Cookstown Youth U16’s entertained Brookvale FC in the Mid Ulster Youth League at MUSA on Saturday. The home team made the brighter start but was shocked when the referee blew for a penalty after five minutes, claiming handball. But a superb save from goalkeeper Adam Taylor denied Brookvale an early lead. This save galvanised Cookstown who scored a few minutes later when Daniel Barfoot’s header was met by Mattie Ekiert who slotted home. Brookvale pushed for an equaliser but the strong defence lead by Man of the Match Rhys Campbell ensured the goal would not be breached. Midway through the second half Cookstown doubled their lead when Campbell’s free kick found Barfoot whose layoff was converted by Jamie Smith. Minutes later, a piece of individual brilliance from Barfoot saw him pick up the ball outside the penalty area dribble past three defenders before shooting into the corner of the net. With fulltime approaching a long free kick from Campbell was flicked on by Smith into the path of Rohan Lennox, his cross found Ekiert at the back post who fired low into the net.

                                                              CYFC Colts 2-2 Killymoon Rangers

Last Saturday the Colts entertained Killymoon Rangers at MUSA in their latest league encounter.

The game started well but as has been to norm in recent games the Colts found themselves one down after only five minutes when a cross field pass was not cut out and Killymoon forward Coyle cut inside and fired into the far side of the net.

The Colts picked themselves up and William Montgomery found himself through twice only for Killymoon keeper Michael Brown to do his job. A Killymoon attack saw a shot from McNicholl blocked by Rian Mullan. Shortly after Killymoon were awarded a penalty and young keeper Keelan Gault pulled off an outstanding save down to his right.

Cookstown Colts started to take control and whilst the game swung for both sides the Colts created a number of chances. A Ryan O’Neill free kick went just wide, another O’Neill free kick found Adam Bell at the back post but once again Brown was there to save. An O’Neill cross was met by Piotr Gubyrsiak who hit the post and then a Montgomery headed came back of the bar.

Despite being on top the Colts were hit with a sucker punch just before half time when they failed to clear a cross which was picked up by McNicholl and fired home past Gault. Straight from the kick off an O’Neill was saved by Brown to leave the half time score 0-2. Ten minutes into the second half Gubyrsiak was upended in the box and Tiarnan Brennan dispatched the penalty to reduce the deficit. Six minutes later Montgomery was upended in the box and again Brennan dispatched the penalty to bring the Colts level.

Adam Bell and David Millar worked tirelessly in the heart of the defense with Caleb Robb and Brennan doing their bit in the middle of the park. As both teams pressed for a winner the Colts saw Brown save from Gubyrsiak and Cameron McMullan hit the side netting.

Manager Noel McKenzie said it was another good performance from the Colts. A great team performance to come back from two goals down. A game we perhaps should have won given the number of chances we created but great that we had five 17 year olds on the pitch who certainly did not look out of place at this level.

Team: K Gault, R Mullan, D Millar, A Bell, C McMullan, R Dobson, T Brennan, C Robb, P Gubyrsiak, R O’Neill, W Montgomery. R McKenzie, F De Silva, K McMullan, J Scott.
