08/09/18 – CYFC Match Reports

CYFC u10s were Defeated by Dungannon Swifts u10s

Saturday morning saw the U10s take the short trip to Dungannon to face local rivals Dungannon Swifts. The boys were in good spirits after a good performance in their first match the previous week & confidence was high in the squad. Both teams started well with Dungannon having the first of the chances only to be denied by a smart block by Mcmullan in the centre of CYFC’S defence. CYFC also had a half chance when Moore broke on the right only to see his shot easily gathered by the Dungannon keeper. The breakthrough came for Dungannon after a corner which wasn’t cleared by CYFC fell to the Dungannon striker who drilled the ball into the back of the CYFC net. This seemed to only spur on CYFC & after a good period of possession saw a corner not cleared by Dungannon fall to Levsins who smashed it home from close range. Midfield was a hard fought battle with Campbell & Ortzel battling hard with the Dungannon midfield. Kerr on the Left & Moore on the right of the CYFC midfield were constantly running the line in both directions working very hard for the team. Dungannon took the lead in the late stages of the first half when McGurk was dispossessed on the edge of the CYFC area & the Dungannon striker placed the ball into the corner of the net giving Wilkinson no chance in the CYFC goals.

The2nd half started well for CYFC & Ward had a volley beat the keeper but just sail narrowly over the crossbar. Moore also had a huge free kick claim as he was through on goal only to be pulled back by the Dungannon defence only for the ref to wave away any claims for a free kick. CYFC continued to play some great football and a well worked piece of play saw a smart through ball from Campbell cut the Dungannon defence open for Gabrysiak to cross into Moore who hit it full on the volley only for it to hit the Dungannon keeper, a goal mouth scramble ensued with shots by Gabrysiak, Ward & Moore all blocked on the line by the Dungannon defence. Then A mistake in the CYFC defence saw Dungannon increase their lead, totally against the run play. This knocked the CYFC boys a few minutes & Dungannon pounced once again when a long range shot, which seemed to squeeze through a body of players & leave Wilkinson unsighted & Dungannon to score. Once again the CYFC boys pressed Dungannon & Campbell went close with a long range free kick. Moore who was beating the Dungannon defence for pace also saw a shot well saved by the Dungannon keeper who was having a terrific game & being the busier of the 2 keepers. In the dying moments a poorly cleared ball Dungannon fell to Ward who’s resulting shot hit the top of the Dungannon bar. The game ended with Dungannon taking the win however CYFC can be extremely proud of their performance & their style of play. The performances are there & their first win will not be far away!!

CYFC u11s Defeated Portadown Youth u11s

Cookstown welcomed portadown to the mid ulster sports arena on saturday for there 2nd league game of the season. Both teams started very well playing some great attacking football but it was cookstown who made the breakthrough on the 10th minute. Jay wilson nipped in between the two portadown defenders and lobbed the ball over the keeper to put cookstown 1 up. This seemed to settle the cyfc lads and they kept on pressing the portadown backline an soon after Jake Donnelly made it 2-0 with a delightfull shot on the turn from 20 yards out. Cyfc were in no mood to take there foot of the gas and 5 mins before the break ,Isaac kelso through sheer persistance and determination made it 3-0 to leave the boys 3 up at half time.
The second half started much the same as how the first one ended with cyfc on the front foot and the defence of Irwin, Ferson an Patterson standing strong . The Portadown boys confidence dipped an cyfc took full advantage with Jay wilson making it 4-0 with a fine finish . The cookstown boys were really enjoying themselves now an Caleb Talbot scored his first goal for the club with a cool finish to make it 5 . Jay wilson then completed his hatrick on the day and Jake Donnelly grabbed his second of the game. With five minutes left an Portadown well beaten the portadown defender unluckily turned the ball into his own net and full back Jack Patterson ghosted in at the back post to tap the ball home from 5 yards out to leave the game cyfc 9-0 Portadown Youth . A very pleasing performance today from all the squad an a special mention must go to Harry Mckenzie who had a man of the match performance today ,well done everyone!

CYFC u13s 5 – 1 Tandragee u13s

On Saturday the CYFC under 13 Youth team travelled to Tandragee for their second league match of the season. Having secured a convincing win the previous week the team were keen to create further momentum. The opening exchanges saw the Tandragee team take the initiative and were unlucky not to score from several attempts.  The CYFC lads looked unsure of themselves and lacked confidence. Mid way through the first half the mid field of Peter McClean, Tom Wilkinson, Jack Kearney and Vance McKeown started to take control. CYFC opened the scoring from a Peter McLean corner, beautifully controlled by Tom Wilkinson and rifled into the net by Ben Mallon. The goal spurred the CYFC lads on and it wasn’t too long before Ben Mallon made a beautiful solo run down the left hand side, beating several defenders before slotting the ball into the Tandragee net. Just before half time Mallon secured his hat trick, latching onto a beautiful through ball from Vance McKeown, holding off several defenders before launching a scorching shot into the bottom left hand corner of the Tandragee net.

The second half saw more sparkling football from the CYFC team as they grew in confidence. Some beautiful intricate passing from Aaron Quinn, Vance McKeown and Ben Mallon set up Shea McGeehan to slot the ball home from 5 yards out. The final goal came from a dazzling run by Chris Ward down the right hand side, passing the ball into Dara McNally who didn’t miss the opportunity to add to his tally this season. Tandragee did manage to get a consolation goal just before the final whistle with a speculative high ball which just beat young McClure in nets. A satisfying performance from CYFC and they will look forward to the match next Saturday at MUSA against Lurgan Town (KO 10.30)

Squad: Jack McClure (c), Tom Pitts, Aaron Quinn, Luke McElkennon, Charlie Hawker, Tom Wilkinson, Jack Kearney, Vance McKeown, Peter McClean, Ben Mallon, Shea McGeehan, Chris Ward, Conall Sheehy, Dara McNally, James Bell and Jamie Kerrigan

CYFC u16s 2 – 0 Bandbridge Rangers u16s

Cookstown Youth U16’s travelled to Woodlands in Gilford to play Banbridge Rangers in the Mid Ulster Youth League on Saturday. Cookstown were determined to get off to a good start and were immediately on the front foot, putting the home team under pressure. Cookstown were awarded a penalty in the tenth minute when Mattie Ekiert was crudely brought down in the penalty area. Jamie Smith converted to put Cookstown ahead. Cookstown kept up the pressure, playing neat football and scored a second in the twenty fifth minute when a corner taken by Callum Davidson wasn’t dealt with by the home defense, allowing Mattie Ekiert to fire home from close range. Banbridge pushed forward in the second half looking to get something from the game, but a solid defensive performance from Cookstown ensured no goals would be conceded. An away win and a clean sheet, both fully deserved. Two wins from two, a great start to the season for Cookstown.

Squad: A.Taylor, A. Devlin, C.Ballentine, T.Davidson, G.Cahoon, D.Barfoot, C.Davidson, J.Donnelly, M.Ekiert, J.Smith, N.Hailing, J.Martin, R.Campbell, R.Lennox

CYFC u18s 7 – 1 Silverwood u18s

The opening game of the season for the U18’s started in the Savage Cup Group 2 league game against AFC Silverwood from Craigavon.

Cookstown started off slowly and AFC  Silverwood with a few of their bigger players were asserting their dominance physically BUT the defence of Glendinning, Patterson, Mullan, Kenning and Campbell were holding strong.

Both teams were testing each other with attacks going back and forth and once cookstown got into the game they started pushing silverwood back into their half.

The first goal after 25mins came from a silverwood attack when the cookstown defence stopped another attack, Campbell spotted Gabrysiak 1 on 1 with the silverwood right back, Campbell threw the ball to piotr who controlled the ball with his first touch, put it past the defender with his 2nd touch and then went on a 40mtr run from just inside the cookstown half , 1 of the silverwood midfielders tried and failed to bring Gabrysiak down but he leaped over him and slotted coolly into the bottom right hand corner. CYFC 1-0.

Gabrysiak’s 2nd goal was a carbon copy of his first one just 5 mins later, same supplier in Campbell, same left wing and same right back for silverwood and this time peter went the other side and put in the bottom left hand corner. CYFC 2-0.

Silverwood were creating chances with a few shots and they also and missed a certain goal but the midfielder misjudged his header from a corner and it flew just yards wide of the goal that would have made it 2-1, Silverwood have to be kicking themselves as they would have been back in the game.

This really made Cookstown up the tempo again, the midfield trio of Silva, Biggers and Robb were taking control against the silverwood midfield and our front 3 of Traill, McGoniglea and Gabrysiak were torturing the Silverwood defence.

Campbell helped put the game out of sight with his 3rd assist of the day when he launched a goal kick up the pitch and the ball landed just right for Robb to latch onto it and bury it in to the net with 2 mins before half time. CYFC 3-0

After the halftime team talk by Millar and Leek the boys came out flying and started playing better football. It didn’t help Silverwood that they went 3 at the back in defence and this played into cookstowns hands as once they started playing football on the ground and using the pace we had up front it was only a matter of time before we scored again.

On 50 mins McGoniglea exchanged passed with silva and then went past 2 players fed trail up front and from just outside the area buried the ball into the bottom right hand corner to make it 4-0.  CYFC 4-0

This was to be Mcgoniglea’s last moment as he was replaced by McCracken, McCracken didn’t take long to introduce himself to Silverwood when he scored his 1st goal.

From a corner the ball was cleared and after a neat 1-2 with Silva outside the box, McCracken turned and hit the net giving the silverwood keeper no chance. At this stage it was all cookstown and they didn’t stop there. CYFC 5-0

Mullan came on for Kenning and Montgomery came on for Glendinning and Gault came on for the captain Campbell in goal.

This didn’t stop anything though as the cookstown dominance continued although Silverwood did pull one back from a free kick , Gault saved well but the Silverwood front man was quickest to the rebound and put into the roof of the cookstown net.

After this Gault didn’t want to be outshone by Campbell and got an assist himself when again a long goal kick beat the silverwood back 3 and McCracken fired his 2nd into the roof of the net again.

Traill rounded of the goals with a perfectly timed pass from midfield and he coolly chipped the advancing keeper to make it u18’s 7 – 1 AFC Silverwood.A good start to the season for this young team and it should be a good boost for this young team.

Squad:  J.Campbell, J. Glendinning, B.Patterson, R .Mullan, W.Kenning, P.Gabrysiak, F.Silva, D.Biggers, C.McGoniglea, C. Robb, A.Traill, M.McCracken, R.Mullan, A.Montgomery, K Gault, L. Patterson.
