U12 Colts Suffer Defeat To Limavady In Cup

CYFC u12 Colts 0 – 2 Limavady

On Saturday Cookstown travelled to Limavady for their first round game in the Northern Ireland Cup.

The opening ten minutes of the game were very competitive with both sides battling for every ball. The midfield pairing of Shaun Og Shields and Shayne Ferrity were working hard but were being closed down very quickly by a strong Limavady side. Ciaran Devlin looked like Cookstown’s biggest threat down the right hand side and was doing very well to bring his side forward. Jude Murphy linked well with Matthew McDaid and did well to be strong up front. The back line of Dylan Hamilton, Scott Gillis and Sean Devlin soon came under lots of pressure when Limavady pushed forward. Ethan Gordon pulled off two super saves from close range to keep Limavady out. On the stroke of half time Cookstown lost their concentration when a long ball forward was not cleared and broke to the Limavady forward who squared the ball to his team mate tap in.

Cookstown made some changes shortly into the half with Ryan Huey, Jake Ballantine, PJ Cassidy, Jamie Barry and Callum McCreesh all being introduced. With these changes Cookstown began to look more dangerous on the attack. Callum McCreesh added some energy to the team and made a few good runs through midfield, linking up with PJ Cassidy going forward. Cookstown continued to press forward and almost got their equaliser when Jake Ballantine used his pace to get in behind the Limavady defence but his effort bounced back off the post. Cookstown had a few further half chances from set pieces but Limavady got their second goal in the final ten minutes and were able to hold onto their lead.

Cookstown will look to improve on this performance as they get back to league action next Saturday, facing a very good Glenavon side in what should be another very competitive game for the Colts.
