CYFC u12s Win Thrilling Encounter

CYFC u12s 3 – Glenavon 1

On Saturday the CYFC Youth team took on Glenavon in the first encounter of the season. This was a much-anticipated match following a thriller last season in the League Cup semi-final. The early exchanges were dominated by the men from Lurgan as they pressed hard for an early goal. Some strong defending from Connall Sheehy and Luke McElkennon, combined with superb goalkeeping from Jack McClure kept the scores level.

The game started to turn midway through the first half as the midfield line up of Tom Wilkinson, Aaron Quinn, Vance McKeown and Luke Neeson started to take the game by the scruff of the neck. The deadlock was eventually broken by some outstanding individual play from Luke Neeson. Beating two Glenavon players with ease he stroked the ball superbly into the bottom right hand corner of the net to take the lead.

The CYFC lads continued the momentum into the second half and were the stronger of the two teams by some way. A number of changes were made early in the first half with Peter McClean, Jamie Kerrigan, Tom Pitts and Tom Bell coming on. The changes seemed to unsettle the rhythm of the game and Glenavon managed to cut through the middle of the CYFC defence, finishing clinically to even up the score.

Spurred on by the set back the CYFC team upped the intensity, working hard to press Glenavon into their own half. It wasn’t too long before they regained the lead with a beautiful cross from Peter McClean from the right wing, matched by a crunching finish by Dara McNally past the keeper into the bottom left hand corner of the net.

With 5 minutes remaining the CYFC team extended their lead with some superb play by Vance McKeown presenting James Bell with a lovely through ball which he dispatched with consummate ease into the Glenavon net. This will feel like a sweet victory for the Under 12 team given the heart-breaking defeat to Glenavon last year and will no doubt be an important springboard to the rest of their season

Team: Jack McClure, Luke McElkennon, Connall Sheehy, Tom Wilkinson, Aaron Quinn, Luke Neeson, Vance McKeown, James Bell, Dara McNally, Tom Bell, Peter McClean, Tom Pitts and Jamie Kerrigan.
